Blutooth help

I have a gumstix board, and Debian sarge 3.1 installed on my Dell CPx laptop. I installed bluez-utils, bluez-libs, bluez-firmware, and hcidumb on my laptop, and bluez-utils, bluez-libs on the gumstix board. I use hciconfig on both machines, to see if it is up and running, and it is, I get address for both. but when I do a hci_scan I can not find the devices which are right next to one another. I followed this tutorial, and still could not get the 2 devices to link.( Can anyone help me out, or give me a more easy to used, and learn tutorial? I really appreciate the help.

What is the output of 'hcitool scan'? DO you have something handy like a Bluetooth phone to see if it can find either of them or if they can find it?
