Blinking screen pixels and spontaneous log outs on Xubuntu 11.10

Hi. I'm running Xubuntu 11.10. I have had something strange going on for a while now where sometimes, when I turn on the computer, a few pixels will be missing from the top of the screen, and two of them will flash white about twice per second. Also, when this occurs, sometimes a large, jagged chunk will be taken out of the picture on the top of the monitor, and it will just be black there. When I move the mouse, that goes away. Here's a picture. It looks kind of foggy on the preview page but you can see it better if you zoom.

I tried another monitor and it's the same. The reason I don't think this is a cable issue or some other hardware problem is that whenever this happens, as soon as I start typing something, (usually when I press enter), I will get spontaneously logged out of my desktop session and have to log in again. Then, when I am back, the blinking and other weirdness will be gone.

Any ideas on what this might be?

I usually see those type of artifacts when the video card is faulty. This type of error together with the constant logouts (which usually means that your video driver/X.Org has crashed) let me assume that you should replace the video hardware.

Oh, I see what you mean about the video driver and the logouts. Thanks! Assuming I do not replace it right away, though, is there any indication of how long it may last? Right now it's more of a curiosity than an annoyance.

It can die in five minutes, it can also die never, but most likely this will become worse over time.
