Blank screen at bootup
 

Hello everybody,


This is what I am working with as far as hardware:
2.6 Intell cpu w/hyper-threading.
120Gb hd (this is a dual boot system, I have winXP and redhat 9.0 on seperate drives.)
1GB of RAM.
128 MB Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 video card.
NEC Monitor

The problem I am havinf is when it boots up, it loads the boot-loader, I choose redhat and it starts to bring my system up for the first time. When it gets to the "first boot" prompt my screen seems to go into power save mode. I did another install and chose the geforce generic driver thinking this would fix the problem, but it didn't. Can anyone give me a hint as to what I need to do? I am a newbie obviously and would like to get redhat going. Any and all help is welcomed.

The only thing I can think of is vesa framebuffer stuff is not compiled in your kernel. Are you using a redhat kernel or one you compiled yourself? At the grub screen hit e then put "vga=normal" no quotes on your kernel command line. You wont have tux but that might solve your blank screen problems.

I tried it, still got the same thing. I did a reinstall and chose a generic nvidia driver hoping that might be it. That didn't work either. I am wondering if I am going to ahve to install and choose a different driver until I get a right one (shudders). I have ubuntu and it loads fine. But I took a class using redhat and I am more comfortable using it. I'll keep trying to fix it if people keep giveing me ideas.

Update:
I went back in setup and when it came time to select a video card driver I choose to skip the x configuration. I know get a local login prompt. I log on as root and now I get a x configuration message saying that it will try to run and configor the video. It does this and my screen still goes blank. Anymore ideas out there?

I am at a loss now. Think I am going to trash this and give up.

Try using Nvidia's drivers.

I have had this problem too. I have found that it happens more often when using DVI connectors for some reason (I have both via my HP port replicator. I have also found that it can be specific to the screen in use, my LCD blanks during bootup but comes back when the GUI is loaded, and by default it won't let the SUSE install run unless I change the resolution. When I plug in a standard CRT it works fine. I even run the setup in the preferred resolution of 1280x1024 for the Philps 108P that I have and it doesn't work until I drop the res to 1024x768. I hope this helps you some way, try changing the monitor first to see if it helps.

Well I got tired of Red Hat 9.0, I downloaded Fedora Core3 and for and got 3 to work pretty good. The only problem I think I have is my sound card was working but now it's not and my monitor gets a little fuzzy if I have a picture or window up to close to close to the top. But I think that is driver issues. Thanks for the hand-holding so far.
