blackbox from winders
 
ok here is what i do

1). get blackbox the stable version
2). shove it onto a windows floppy
3). run to rh box
4). mkdir /floppy
5). mount -t msdos /dev/fd0/ /floppy
6). gunzip -v blackb~1.gz
7). "Input/output error"

did i do something wrong?!

5). You can just use
mount /dev/fd0 /floppy see if it determines filesystem itself (hint look up /etc/fstab and in filesystem column it might say auto for floppy)
6) Where are you running gunzip? in /floppy directory? try it in your /home for instance
[you@yourdomain ~you]# gunzip -v /floppy/black*gz

tried the above and still get the same old error

Two things then - download was corrupted, the floppy is bad. If you used ftp client to get the soft make sure teh transmission is performed in binary mode (not ASCII as some ftp clients and web browsers default to)

i did a download right onto the floppy using IE 6.0 which i am told has binary is this correct?

Supposedly, but did you concider downloading to HD and then move the file to a floppy,, try another floppy if possible. And to be sure you have the right download it should come with md5sum, just run this handy utility to verify the sum is correct.
md5sum filename
