Black Screen with "_"

Occasionally, after logging in as root (to make changes to the display, etc), SUSE will tell me that it is checking the password. The box will then disappear, and a few seconds later a black screen will appear (full screen), just with a "_" in it. I cant then use escape to exit it, or type anything. (In other words, I can only restart the computer from there).

Update: I have narrowed this down: it only does this when changing a display setting, such as the screensaver or resolution. Everything else (themes, backgrounds etc) work perfectly.

Basic Computer Specs:

Intel Celeron 2.4GHz ?
nVidea GeForce FX 5200
60Gb HDD
512Mb RAM

By the way, from what I've seen from Linux so far, (especially with SUSE), is that it is so much more user-friendly than Windows, IMO. The way that you do things with it seems much more straight-forward and sensible than some of the things that need to be done on Windows...

Anyway, thanks for any help!

You said you "can't then use escape to exit". Have you tried Ctrl+Alt+F[1-12] to switch VTs? I believe the default for an unused open VT is a blank screen with a non-blinking `cursor' in the upper left corner.

No, that hasn't helped

I think the problem lies with the video card.. Because whenever I do something on this screen I can hear the computer working...
