Black screen during startup Linux for a few minutes - amdgpu SMU issue, Radeon 5700 XT

Hello,

When I boot my Ubuntu 22.10 with kernel 5.19.0-23-generic I have a black screen for a few minutes. After this time my system starts.

In the logs I see many issues:
amdgpu 0000:0d:00.0: amdgpu: Failed to retrieve enabled ppfeatures!
amdgpu 0000:0d:00.0: amdgpu: SMU: I'm not done with your previous command: SMN_C2PMSG_66:0x0000000D SMN_C2PMSG_82:0x00000000

I have Redeon 5700 XT graphics card: lspci -nn | grep VGA
0d:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 10 [Radeon RX 5600 OEM/5600 XT / 5700/5700 XT] [1002:731f] (rev c1)

uname -a
Linux computer01 5.19.0-23-generic #24-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Oct 14 15:39:57 UTC 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Similar problem is described also on this site (for Manjaro Linux): https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1886, but I don't now how to resolve it in my case.
Could you help me to resolve this issue?

Hey KubaP,

I have a similar issue on an old 2008-era laptop with another Debian-derived distro (AntiX). It only happens with 5-series versions of the linux kernel. If I boot a 4-series kernel, there is no booting delay.

My guess for my system is that newer versions of the linux kernel dropped firmware support for some hardware component in my old laptop. I know the kernel developers made a decision a while back to offload some little-used firmware from the kernel itself in order to reduce size. Separate firmware modules are available to compensate. From your logs, it seems your issue may be related to your Radeon display adapter - you could perhaps start looking for the appropriate firmware in the Ubuntu repositories.

The other alternative is to backtrack kernel versions to one where your system boots without delay. In my case, for example, the 4.19 version of the kernel boots without delay.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Hi Rickkk,

You are right - on 4-series kernel my system boots without delay.
Could you tell me how can I find firmware in the Ubuntu repositories for 5.19 kernel version (for radeon 5700 xt)?
I have tried find some firmware/driver, but I unfortunately I did not find anything.

Thank's,
KubaP

Hi KubaP,

I did a quick bit of research concerning your Radeon 5700 XT and the 5.19 kernel. I'd recommend you do the same. The issue may not be simply due to firmware - it isn't quite clear. What does seem to be clear is that certain issues were first reported in the 5.19 version of the kernel and that some have had success going back to 5.18 (so not necessarily all the way back to 4 series ...).

You could start with this link :

Cheers.
