Black, blank windows on openSUSE 12.1 with Gnome 3.2

Hello all!

After becoming sick of windows I decided to make the leap to Linux. I partition my hard disk and download openSUSE 12.1. Install went fine.

However when I open applications e.g. Firefox, I am presented with an entirely black window with the tab shown next to "Activities".

Anyone know what the problem is?

How can I access the terminal? Xterm is presented as an entirely blank, black window...

Any help is appreciated

I have googled and it seems disabling desktop effects might help. How would I go about doing this?
