Bizzarre internet connection problem...

Morning!

I am having a very strange problem with connecting to the internet. It all connects fine, but i can't get to my site (http://avi.greenbury.co.uk) via http or ftp. I can neither update nor view it. The browser always times out. I haven't had it do that on any other URL.
The IC settings were set on install, and i'm sure i managed to get at it before. I can get at it from the machines at uni, too, which are running Debian.

Any ideas?

Maybe your firewall?

Well getting at it from Uni rules out the usual router/port forwarding as it looks like that's already done.

Next stop is your firewall, never really used mandriva, probably has some basic firewall settings in the ocntrol centre, you can also get firestarteror guardog for GUI frontends to iptables, or learn iptables.

The fact that you can get to other sites but not yours also suggests that port 80 is fine but your website is running off of a different port?? you should make sure that is open in the firewalls.

is the webserver on the same LAN?

No, webserver's on a different continent.
Do you know of any good resources for learning how to play with iptables? And what should i be doing to them?

Cheers!

Edit:
Knowing MDV, there's probably a GUI for the firewall, in fact i think i remember seeing it. I'll poke around when i get home, and get back to you.

Manual Override

This may sound silly, but have you checked your hosts file? That overrides any other DNS entries and, if set incorrectly, would exhibit exactly the behavior you describe.

I've just tried getting at this in my Windows boot, and it gets the same problem, which i think rules out it being anything on my box.

I've opened port 21 on the router's firewall (which is the correct one for this server) but i'm getting the same problem (in both OS's).

What do you mean by 'host's file'? Would that be the router?

Lordandmaker 12-11-2005 08:24 PM

OK, no-one this side of my router can get at the domain (Win boxes included). I can't get at it via domain name nor ip address. I can ping it using a remote ping tool.
I've tried opening up all sorts of ports on the router to get to it, but can't. I can get at another site that's hosted on the same server, though.

Any ideas at all as to what i should be trying?
