Bind 9.3.4 and Centos
 

Hi,

I havnt used linux in years...my last linux was FC3 so I am now wanted to configure a dns server on Centos 5.1 and I cant find any if the config files.

I did a yum install bind* which installed all bind packages, but I cant find named.conf anywhere. Instead im confronted with all these chroot directories and its all structured completely different to what I remember.

Can anyone assist? What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

Usually there is no named.conf by default - that would be silly, because it needs to have reasonable contents and the Fedora guys can hardly guess what each unique user want to have as a default.

Just create /etc/named.conf as root and define your first zone, even if it's only one for testing.

If you installed bind-chroot (obviously), then you also have to create links from your chroot setup to the standard locations. If you don't want bind-chroot, then uninstall it (either yum or rpm), and produce a standard name server (usual file locations).

Howtoforge has good tutorials on everything Linux, and tldp.org also has the BIND-HOWTO with all the precious details.

If you aren't required to run BIND for any reason, you may want to look into DjbDNS, otherwise start reading :)
