Big Trouble
I was trying to edit my XF86Config file to get my side buttons on my mouse to work. Well, after a long time of battling with it i decided just to change it back and live with no side buttons. However after i restarted, it didn't start X and I got some kind of configuration error with the XF86Config file. I'm trying to get into it to edit it (using command line) and change it back the way it was, but im not sure how to do this. I did a "vi XF86Config" and that showed me the file but i don't know how to save the changes i make to it. Help! :)

"vimtutor" will give you all the commands.

Distaster averted! :) There are just some things im going to have to live with in Linux and that's one of them.

i have encountered the same problem... the simplest way to fix this if you have no clue what you did wrong in the xf86config file is to cp xf86config.backup as xf86config so you can start fresh i too am trying to find a way to configure my side buttons on my mouse - i have a logitec mx700 but have had no luck :( |
vi is said to be powerful but it isn't an editor you can use instantly. You probably have a couple of easy to use guys on your system like pico, jed, nano ... if you want quick and simple.
