bibliographic /note taking software

I have fedora4 loaded
need to get a good bibliographic software program
notes, searching, citations etc
for writers and academics

have heard about tomboy, bibus and scribe

any suggestions on what is best to use and were it can be found
currently useing sourceforge

I need to build a reference database for writing
so help would be appreciated
