Best LX for a PentiumIII PC
 

Hello, i'd like to start my adventure with LX, so i installed Mandriva Linux 2006 Free Edition. It's OK, but my PC isn't fast enough for it... :(

I'm looking for a LX distribution that will work nice on my old
Pentium III
192 MB Ram
Riva TNT 2
Computer...

Please, give me some advise, cause i'm sort of lost in the various distros, and don't know what to choose.

I'm a advanced Windows user.

I use redhat 9 (still) . I started using it on PIII & 128 MB ram.It ran fairly fast.
the only problem is I dont know how u can get it other from here.

isn't redhat 9 a outdated distro?

yes it is but the problem is FC1 to FC4 assume u have processor of speed 2.5 Ghz or more & atleast 256 MB ram .I dont know much about mandriva.

Try Ubuntu linux. I have played around with it but dont know much about it. it is also fairly good with ur configurations.

Don't get into the trap of thinking you should use an older distro because you have older hardware. Any distro will do for you. If you choose one of the more bloated ones, for example Mandrake there will be many unneccessary daemons (services) you can turn off to free up resources. You may find that gnome and KDE are to heavy for your liking so use a lighter DE like xfce or just a plain window manager like fluxbox.

You may benefit from finding a bit more memory for your machine, however.

I've run FC2 and 3 on an Athlon thunderbird with 256 Megs of memory perfectly well, oh and using gnome aswell

I run SuSE 9.3 (and FreeBSD 6.0) on P3 500 and 384MB RAM, with KDE 3.3.4; Vector Linux 5.1 and ZenWalk 2.01 on Celeron 333Mhz and 128 MB, with XFCE. No problems whatsoever, altough Vector may lag a bit, but I cannot get hold of the extra 66MHZ SDRAM I need (I am not searching frantically though). Just to give you an idea.

I've used FC4 on P2 Celeron 333MHz with 256MB of RAM before, and it's a little slow in response and stuff, but otherwise it runs perfectly and supports the latest software. You computer is not old, and pretty much any distro will probably run fine on it.

I would recommend Ubuntu. It's fast, it's relatively small (just one CD), and the package manager is wonderful, especially if you're new to Linux.

I ran Arch 0.7 and 0.71 on a PII Machine 600MHz. Worked very nicely.
Arch gives you a command-line interface, so it's not as easy, but you learn how to swim VERY quickly.

I have used debian on a K5 300MHz and found it fine, using xfce. With debian you can choose to only install certain packages, so it can be as small or big as you like

I run FC4 on a Pentium III 866, with 512 MB ram. Memory is cheap, so it's worth it.

But U still need 512 MB RAM.

Anyway its great to know that if u have large memory & a slow processor, we can do with the latest linux.

I don't think I "need" 512 MB of RAM to run it. IT just so happens that I have 512 MB of RAM installed. I also have a 1.4 ghz centrino laptop, with 512 MB of RAM. I can set the cpu at 600 Mhz, and it runs FC4 fine as well.

No PC is fast enough for mandriva 2006 with some of it's rubbish running :) Kill kat and compile a kernel and it runs better :) I run mandrake 10.1 and KDE on p3's and p3's here... Even far less, like a p166 with 64meg, but you need to trim the fat.
