"Best" is totally subjective.

Since this is such a frequently-asked question, we have a poll and discussion on the topic once a year:

A few suggestions of my own: CentOS, Debian, Slackware

Personally I prefer Slackware for it's UNIX-like feel and that the maintainer PV does maintain the same sense of simplicity throughout.

Never really care for GUI front ends to maintain the system, prefer the 'cli' (command line interface) since I really do not need someone between myself and the system. Less chances of error for the 'cli' for knowledgeable superusers. 'man command' is your friend!

LQ's Download Linux is a good source for ISO images.

You can use the following to help too download & verify the ISO image on a Windows/Xp machine;

M$Windows:
Windows Burn tutorial <- 'Nero' Live Video for the newbies who burn the iso instead of the image of the ISO.
Imgburn <- 'ImgBurn is a lightweight CD / DVD / HD DVD / Blu-ray burning application that everyone should have in their toolkit!' + Freeware
-- MD5SUM:
M$Windows iso md5sum checking <- LQ Post on how too
md5sum.exe <- M$Win Application to perform md5sum checking.
winMd5Sum Portable <- FREE + Good for all M$ Windows
I do suggest that you use a slow burn rate, 4 should provide a valid burn of the ISO image. Please be sure to burn the ISO image.

The best Linux distro for a sysadmin is the one that is needed to get some sort of "real work" done in a production environment. The sysadmin isn't the important part, but rather the servers she takes care of and the work they do for the organization. Whatever distro best accomplishes that work is the "best", which varies substantially from situation to situation.

That being said, if you want to learn to be a sysadmin, I'd suggest (in no particular order):

- CentOS (free rebuild of RHEL, which is widely used in industry)
- SuSE (SLES and SLED are also popular in the corporate world, especially in Europe)
- Debian (believe it or not, I know several shops that have a most or all Debian infrastructure, and most of the skills transmit well to Ubuntu server too)
- FreeBSD (not Linux, but popular on Web server farms)

It may depend on your hardware and exactly what you mean by administration.
The poll was not exactly for administration, it was for server so that may skew the issue.
