Your question should be "what is good hardware for linux", because hardware support is a kernel thing, so all distros can support the same hardware.

Try searching, its asked a lot.

I usually recommend getting Nvidia Video cards (as they have official drivers) and a Creative SB Live or Audigy.

And of course, name brand hardware thats not ridiculously new.

Hi dbgtwill1

My hardware under Red Hat 9

MSI 845 GE MAX L - ( Intel 845 GE Chipset )
Intel Celeron 1.7ghz (oc'd 1.92)
Hynix DDR 256 mb RAM
MSI Nvidia geforce 4 MX 440 SE graphics card

No problems - further you shouldnt have any problems with standard hardware like

Floppy drives
CD - Rom drives
Hard drives

Winmodems are sometimes problematic under Linux - if possible - get an External Serial Modem - however - if you did want to go with a Winmodem - check out this site - its a good starting poiht for Winmodem info and Linux

http://www.linmodems.org/

Also be flexible in your distro choice - other good candidates are

Mandrake 9.1
SUSE 8.2
JAMD

You can check out all the major Linux distributions and more at Distrowatch .

To know " "what is good hardware for linux" is to test with one of the existing live CDs available on internet. If live CD runs... there you have it. Knoppix live CD has an excellent hardware detect script though to download the CD image takes sometime (699Mb). Arch Linux (AMLUG live CD 0.2) is 225Mb but for i686 pc only.
