Best Distro For Newbie With Pentium D

I recently installed mandriva 2006 on my old machine to have a little play with it, it all went very smoothly and I really liked what I saw. When I tried to install the same on my new system (see below) it got about 2 seconds past the option to install and errored saying "warning, installation of driver failed (please include msg from <alt-F3> for bugreprts)" everything froze and none of the function keys did anything.

Despite loads of ideas from all the great people on here, I didn't get anywhere with it. I was wondering if anyone knows of a different distro that might run a bit smoother. Ideally someone with the same spec PC as me might know of a distro that worked for them.

My system is

Dell Dimension 5150
Pentium D (dualcore) 2.8
1024 Ram
1 SATA 80gb
1 SATA 200gb
NVidia GeForce 256 Graphics card

Thanks in advance!

Arch works flawlessly (minus user error) for me:

AMD 64 3500+ San Diego
1024 DDR 3200 RAM
1 SATA 120 GB
NVidia 7800 GT

Also working on an

Intel P4 2.4 Mhz
512 RAM
1 IDE 120 GB
Ati 9700 Radeon

I dont imagine many distros will have problems with drivers for your stuff (my first suspcion is sata drivers, but i would have thought it supported it, are they raided?)

It's an excellent distro, that encourages you to learn the why as well as the how.

I just tried Debian Sarge on the same box and it doesn't come with a driver that works with the integrated NIC (Intel Pro/100 VE), so I'm in the same boat.
