Welcome to the wonderful world of open source.

some great sources of knowledge are
A) The community of whicever distribution you use (I have found these to be endlessly helpful. Mepis and Archlinux forums rock. Gentoo's is very good as well.)
B) The Gentoo Wiki. This may sound strange, but if you're having a technical difficulty and aren't afraid to find a REAL solution, and not just work around it - this may very well be the place to go.
C) Right here. This community is wonderful. Very helpful and such.

Good luck and best wishes.
