What happened to Bastille Linux?
 

Hi Guys! :hattip:

I heard that Bastille Linux was supposed to be top-notch, but I can't seem to find it. Did it disappear? If it has or has problems, I'll go with IPtables with my Xbuntu for my system. I'm a :newbie:, so it has to be real simple for me to understand it, that and I'll be 66 years old in October, LOL! the brain synapses don't work like they used to. :eek::(

There are only a couple of guys in the area that know Linux and said they would help me, but I haven't heard from them, a so that's why I depend on you gentleman so much.

I believe that Bastille Linux is now called Bastille Unix, but the URL is http://www.bastille-unix.org/ - the change in designation is noted on the project home page, and shouldn't be difficult to follow, and I think that the old URL still works (mapped to the new address).

However, you do know that it isn't a firewall, don't you?

Thanks for the information. Bastile was mentioned to me some years ago as being a "tight" firewall. Now, it's been suggested to
use IPTABLES. Is that the same as IFCHAINS?

There is so much information out there and with me being at a disadvantage (no local help). Makes it even worse. My ham buddy that suggested XBuntu has a new job (although he's retired once already, LOL) and he's too tied up right now to help, so here I am.

I don't want anyone who is not "authorized" by me to have acess to the data I have, Yesm there is a scanner site that has a lot of the same data, but it doesn't contain ALL the data that folks need to make it easier to 'monitor' during a severe storm. This
information also is good for huricane season in the Gulf as well
as the tornado season.

Old folks favorite TV channel is the "Weather Channel", LOL! Now, I don't spend 24/7 looking at the NOAA radar site, but I do watch a LOT of FOXNEWS. I know, I know, no religion or politics, LOL! FOXNEWS does have the prettiest gal newscasters, WOO HOO!

Well, it's almost 5 pm (2200 hrs Zulu) and about time for the
NEWS and History Channel or Military Channel, whichever looks interesting.

Bastille is not a firewall...Bastille is not a firewall. It is a script that checks various setting and gives you some advice about what you could lock down a bit better, if your settings are not in the best security state, but Bastille is not a firewall.

Iptables (or Iptables/netfilter, if you prefer) is a firewall. It succeeded Ipchains at the end of the linux 2.4 kernel series, if my memory serves me correctly, and there was another that served for the pre-2.0 series, but right now and for any reasonable Linux distro (except possibly for the very small that use ancient kernels for very size constrained applications, such as video recorders, and the like) Iptables is the firewall.

Now, there are lots of 'GUI front ends' and all those are, are applications that make it easier to create firewall rulesets without having to learn Iptables. Apparently, some people would rather move visual blocks around the screen than do anything that feels like programming...personally, I'm not sure how much this helps, but if that's what you like, use one of these.

Different distros have their own 'favourites' as far as these GUI firewall building apps are concerned, and, if that's the way that you want to go, have a look in the package manager for your distro and see what is available. If, in something like synaptic, you do a search for anything which in its description includes the text string 'firewall' you'll almost certainly find some.

Usually, these things have names like 'firewallbuilder' or 'simplefirewall' but, as there are probably a couple of dozen of these about, and each distro has about three or four available from their repos, have a look and ask specific questions, if necessary.
