Basic software installation tips

Dear people
As I am new to linux, I was trying to experiment a bit by installing new software packages on the system (RH 9), which in fact installed without a glinch. Well as I was trying to install WINE, which came in the DVD of linux format, and I froze when I started looking at folders and folders all saying WINE... I haven't a clue on how to proceed. It's all so different from WIN.
Don't take me wrong, all that I saw so far is great and I am already in love with linux; but it is kind of a shock for a newbie to get stuck on something that in WIN would be so straight forward.
Is there any basic procedure, or any tips that would help someone like me?
I'm sure this must sound so absurd for you guys but please be patient with newbies like me.
Thanks a lot.

Hi Astropicachu,

You're query isn't a strange one. One of the weaknesses of Linux is software installation. There are many different solutions, some better than others, but there isn't one simple straight-forward installation method that works on all distributions.

Because of that, you need to supply more information on installing WINE. What did you do to install it and what went wrong?
