Basic question about RH9 Up2Date, RAID and Kernels

I searched the forum for a concrete answer to my question, but couldn't find one. Anyway...

I'm running RH9 on a box with a Highpoint RAID controller. When I installed RH9 with RAID support, everything worked fine. This was with the original RH9 kernel. Since then, up2date has downloaded (and installed?) numerous kernel updates, but my box insists on booting the original kernel.

Is it booting the original kernel because I modified the original install by setting up the Highpoint RAID drivers, and RH doesn't know what to do with the new kernels and the original RAID config?
