Basic Linux commands
 

Dear all,
i am new to this site, and i am to linux.
i have linux redhat 9 OS. but i dont know how to work on that.
i unable to open the cdrom, floppy drive,
kindly any one send the basic notes and basic commands in linuc redhat
9.

erm... no. buy a book about getting started in Linux, we aren't here to repeat everything there is to know, as it's take years over a forum and is just daft. you should use forums for specific information about specific problems or queries, not as a human search engine.

Welcome to LQ Senthil.

The real power of the forums comes from having both questions and answers in the same place. A majority of LQ users have their questions answered not by posing but by searching the forums and finding a similar question answered already. If all questions were answered via private correspondence then searching would be pointless.

However, you could try the following.

(1) Linux commands are identical in functionality to Unix. If you are a college student, who is into science stream, buy "The UNIX programming language" by Kernighan and Pike.

(2) To load the linux CD.
2.1 Make safety backups of all your important files on a CD or USB device.
2.2 Ensure that you have enough free space on the PC (about 2 GB) - say.
2.3 Set the system to boot from a CD (change the BIOS setting).
2.4 Load the CD.
2.5 Reboot the computer.
2.6 Follow the prompts.

If in any metro in south india, look for a linux support group.

senthil_s14: RedHat maintains the RHL9 manuals, including installation, in their documentation section: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/

But it’s beyond me why anyone would want to install RHL9, given the availability of much faster distros running the 2.6 kernel. If you need a 2.4 kernel, then install Debian Sarge (current stable, see: http://www.debian.org ) and select the 2.4 kernel instead of the 2.6 kernel. That way, you at least get a relatively modern distro.

P.S. We’re not always this cranky, so be sure to come back for more help as needed.

http://linuxcommand.org/ should be (in my opinion at least) the standard newbie tutorial in Linux. It's comparatively short and easy to understand.

It would be good to know what your native tongue is -- I suppose it is Hindi (going by your name). In that case try to find a good (online) Hindi/English dictionary, because unfortunately Hindi isn't widely used on the Internet.

http://hi.wikipedia.org/ and http://en.wikipedia.org should be quite helpful, too.
