-bash: startx: command not found while using cygwin
 

Hello all,

I just installed cygwin on my windows laptop. When I start cygwin from All Programs and then type startx, I get

-bash: startx: command not found.

I also get the same error for ssh.
$ ssh
-bash: ssh: command not found


Google search told me to confirm X11 is selected to be installed. It was set to default. I changed it to install and tried again. Still seeing the same issue. How do I resolve this? Is there any other way to confirm if X11 is installed? This is my first time using cygwin. Any help/info is much appreciated. Thanks

have you installed ssh and X? How did you check it?

I have installed putty, but not sure of X. How would I install X? I tried startxwin with the same message. Command not found

I think I am missing something obvious. Colucix, I reviewed the link you provided and I did the exact steps upto step 14. However, for step 15, when I clicked view after selecting X11 category, I do not see many of the packages listed in the link such as xorg-server, xinit, etc. I do see a lot of other packages and a screen similar to the one in the link. But no packages related to "x...." I tried downloading from two other mirror sites with the same exact result. Not sure what I am missing.

you would need to show us that screen.

It should be the last entry in the list of available packages and it's named X11. Expand it and you will see a long list of packages. Do you see X11 at the bottom of the list?

Thanks Pan64 and colucix. I uninstalled cygwin completely and then re-installed it. I was then able to view and install the X11 package explicitly. Apparently, during the first run, thee default option for X11 was "do not install". Thanks much for your help
