BASH says "too many arguments" in terminal
 

Hi,
When I open a terminal the first line is: bash: [: too many arguments
Then the prompt.
I had been trying too configure my usb scanner and also my cdrw (the cd writer is ide internal), so I'm not sure what I did exactly. Would it help to send the dmesg errors I get at start-up? I don't really understand too much of what I'm reading. I've been trying to work with Linux for a few years now and I still feel like a newbie.

Hi Mitch ...

You can give the dmesg output a shot.

Chances are, however, that you somehow
screwed up one of the inital scripts run
by init (the [: would suggest that).

Maybe if you have a look through your /etc
directory and check which files were modified
recently ....

Actually I've been operating with it like this for a year now. I'm not sure if it's hurting anything. But I just got my nerve up to tackle it again. I wonder if the linuxconf could be the problem? In /etc/rc.d/init.d is a line modified on 11/21/02 linuxconf -> /usr/lib/linuxconf/redhat/scripts/linuxconf*
It's displayed in light blue and green.
By the way, I'm using Mandrake 9.0 now.

Yo, and no worries. :}

That's fine, that's a symlink ... I can't tell you
where to look, though ... just go through
/etc, /etc/profile.d and /etc/rc.d and its
subdirectories, and check the contents of
the most recently modified shell scripts...

ls -ltr
will give them in the right order.
(newest last)
