bash:ifconfig :command not found


what circumstances can lead to such problems?

Please use

/sbin/ifconfig

The problem occurs normally when the path of executable ifconfig is not appended to your PATH environmental variable

Try to add the :/sbin to your PATH environmental variable....

This can be if you are using the command as non root. I have seen this issue with some distributions if certain commands are not used as root would give error and would need to be explicitly invoked with complete path.
