Backup - what program is best?

I am researching which program is best for backing up essential files - files that will help rebuild a linux (Debian) box in case of a terminal crash.

- I need to know what program that is most appropriate - so far TAR and DUMP are considerations.
- Next question is *what* files should I back up?
- I want to back up to a directory, which will then either be burnt to disk on a local machine or saved in a directory on a local machine.
- Anyone know or be able to write a script???

This has some urgency in that I have at the moment no protection in case of a crash or failure.

Any takers?

TIA

cheers...pix

I suggest looking at partimage, it's a great tool, uses bzip compression, and is also capable of splitting up into bite sized morsels (say 690MB size maybe ).

www.partimage.org

Cool
