Backup my users

I currently have a small ftp setup for about 25 users. I am going to be replacing the system soon and would like to backup all my users and groups.

Can I simply copy the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files and replace them after the new install?

Do you also want to backup the users' files and settings or do you just want your list of users and groups to be the same?

If it is the latter then the answer is probably yes. You might have to recreate the folders for their home directory, though.
