Also, I've downloaded this application from github, and I'm stepping through it, and I still can't see options to backup "root" or "filesystem". Can you be more descriptive on where you are seeing this option?

In that case, you might try learning more generic tools. For instance, rsync is a very common backup tool that gets used by several other backup applications. Learn it, its syntax, and practise using it. Then start exploring the apps that, in turn, use rsync (or librsync). This should give you a better understanding of the backup process, how paths and directories are treated, how comparing file dates and contents works, and so on.

Yes.. Wait no I have to type in the authentication password for admin user, not in the terminal but a GUI password prompt

Ohh ok I was going to get an O'reilly book after I finish this UNIX/Linux Visual Quick Start Guide (Bunny Book) I have. Thanks for relaying that to me tho. I feel like i'll be up to date at least on the administration side as those I think their the 2 best brands that should pair nicely..
