The virtual machine presents a very simple and well supported selection of hardware to the OS running as the guest to maximize compatibility. When running the live disc however, it is using your real hardware which is completely different and may not be supported at all.

The first thing would be to figure out what hardware you are running, and ascertain how well it is supported in Linux. Is this a prebuilt machine? What is the make and model?
