Backtrack video card issues

Im trying to install Backtrack on my hard drive, but i cannot get into any x-windows. My initial problem was that the h/vsycn was way off, so i changed that in the xorg.conf file to the specifications for my monitor (later i found that xconf could do that for me). now, startx will hang the machine using any of the xorg.conf files. the closest i have gotten to getting this to work is doing a xconf, then editing the /etc/X11/gui.conf file and enabeling the second option (some sort of safe mode) it will not get any errors, but also will not load X at all. the other time i came close is just using the stock xorg.conf file with the changed h/vsync options; it will get all the way into kde, but will only show the background with the 'busy' cursor. this is a brand new dell optiplex gx520 with a dell E177FPb flat panel monitor. any ideas? thanks
