when the boot part comes up, add the option

acpi=off

might be some other switch, but the problem might be acpi

When you boot up the computer, your computer reads your dvd and it starts loading up backtrack. Is there a small prompt that says

boot:

then you hit enter and it boots? if so, add

acpi=off

then hit enter, else hit TAB and see how you can disable acpi
