BackTrack 5 r3 MacBook Pro
 

I have installed backtrack 5 r3 on my MacBook Pro 15' (Processor 2.66 GHz Intel core i7 ; Memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR8) via Virtual Box. When I open the wick network manager an error appears " Could not connect the wick's D-bus interface. Check the wick log for error messages." Then it opens up and scans it says wired-default and no wireless networks found. I installed the VBox guest additions.
At some point i tried compiling a few programs on mac os x 10.7 (Lion), and i had no problem running them, except when I tried to use hydra "hydra -l admin -p admin -e ns -t 10 -f -s 192.168.1.1 http-get /
It came up with 0 valid passwords every time. But it worked with hydra from backtrack. I also compiled nmap with worked fine but ettercap didn't get me any logged passwords or usernames.
I would prefer to use backtrack but I can't get it to find wireless networks or get it into full screen mode.

So if you could tell me what I should do to get the wireless networks to be available, if it is possible and how to get a higher resolution to get a better full screen mode, if backtrack doesn't support the mac hardware what I should do to get hydra and ettercap working on my mac.

Ok, what does the log show? Can you post it here? Try to restart the dbus daemon

That's a Mac problem, not a Linux one. Besides, nobody is going to help you hack anything here. There have been many complaints about it.

Have you looked up a tutorial for VirtualBox? If you have internet on your Mac, it is routed (through a software layer) to the virtual machine. If you go to View -> Switch to Fullscreen, it should work (presuming you installed Guest Additions the right way).

you do not

vb can not see the wireless hardware outside of the virtual environment
do a normal real install to the drive
or to a usb drive

also a bit of advice
if you did not already know this then most likely you will NOT be able to use most of the "cracking" software in BT5
you might want to look into using a distro that
is NOT tailored for the VERY experienced " system administrator" "system cracker" and " Network SECURITY EXPERT "

something like Ubuntu or Mint maybe

And if you're looking for solutions to problems unrelated to Backtrack-specific stuff (the hacker software), then look up Ubuntu solutions as Backtrack is based on Ubuntu. John is right. If you are not experienced enough using Linux, you should start with something easy. Certainly not with Backtrack.

Thank you very much for your replies, I'll try to install BT 5 on a USB, it's not to crack anything, it's only to test the software on MY router.
I might try installing Ubuntu.

How do you recommend I should start, to learn more about network penetration testing ?

You first learn the entire process of networking. Next is a through understanding of how applications and OS's use the network or could be affected by network issues.
Leaning other ideas like habits and known holes helps.

First you might want to earn a 4 year degree at your local Univ. in CS.
Then work on a masters in network and computer security .
