Not only for hacking, also for intrusion detection and prevention and security testing (White Hat Hacking). BackTrack is a great tool if you want to test your network. Of course use of it and in which context you use it depends on the individual. I'm an IT professional and have used various tools in the BackTrack3 suite to test our defense to great satisfaction of my customers.

There is a very thin line between hacking and intrusion detection and prevention but as always it depends on who's working the keyboard.

Kind regards,

Eric

Check the minimum requirements of some distro's and compare them to your hardware config. I've successfully used Ubuntu and Debian on old laptops, but taking into account the type of laptop I wouldn't expect fantastic performances.

Kind regards,

Eric
