backing up windows with nfs

I want to back up My WinXP installation onto another box with a free HD.

I got both boxes running Linux and nfs is properly set up, so I can mount the windows partition on the first box and start copying files over to the clean hd on the second box.

Fine and dandy.

However, I want to copy over an image or full mimic of the windows partition. are tools available to do this?

Secondly I want to be able to boot off the windows backup directly. Rather than technical, that's probably a licence issue. WinXP might not let me do this in a different computer or on a different harddisk.

Has anybody done something similar? Any experiences to share?

AFAIK WinXP can't copy all of it's own files itself (M$ anti piracy crippleware) so you'll need a third party prog to do the copying for you.

thanks 4 reply, but I know about windows's inabilities.

At the moment, I'm using Linux (basic bash) commands to copy over the windows data files. I want the image copied over.

Of course NTFS is not an option, as Linux can't backup on to that (not properly anyway) but VFAT is possible.

ANy other insights?

you might be able to use partimage: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/204119
or g4u

Oh yes I see now.

There's a good article in the knoppix forum about it.
