Background images in KDE 3.1 small

I am using KDE 3.1 under Mandrake 9.2 and in the KDE configuration Look and Feel there is a background selection. I have multiple images that I use as background, sort of like my own screensaver, but for some reason some images display very small (like 1 x 2 inches) and others fill the screen. I have things set at centered auto-fit. I tried scaled, but images that are not horizontially rectanglular come out distorted when they are scaled to fit the screen. I have the monitor resolution set at 1024 x 768. I have tried 800 x 600 and things seem to get worse rather than better. The image is SO big that it doesn't all fit on the screen.. I have the images set to randomize. When I set it for In Order, it makes no difference.
Thanks for your time and expertise in helping fix this little annoyance.
