Autostart programs at system startup
 

In Windows there is the possibility to autostart program at system startup.

Is there such a feature in linux?

Or, is there some application to install to get this option?

If you are using KDE, then try saving your current session and that should do what you want. I imagine that there is a similar tool in Gnome.

and most desktop environment have similar ways to start programs when you load your desktop such as there is an option in one of the Gnome controls that allows ou to save your session.

There are also different ways to start programs while the operating system loads.

Google search for the
rc.local or the .bashrc files

Furthermore, Linux comes with a very complete and configurable set of scripts that can be used to start things at boot time (as opposed to login time). I suggest you research the init program and how it works. Since you're using Ubuntu, your system uses System V style initialization.

In my gnome Ubuntu, under System -> Preferences -> Sessions, I found the option to add programs to start at system startup.

Very good! Here I can add whatever I want, as long as the program doesn't need to have root privileges.

I'm satisfied.
