Automator in Linux
For research I use FC 4. I am working on Astronomy data right now and I would like to get repeatative things done automatically. Much like automator in Mac. The files have .fits extension and can be opened using ds9. ds9 gives the choice of saving these files as jpeg. But I need to open each one of them seperately and save them. Given the fact that I have 200 files it will take long boring and tedious time to complete.

I would like to know if you know any shell command or a series that will convert these files into jpeg.

I apprecitate your helpl

You can convert images with the 'convert' command from the Image Magick package, though I have no idea if it can handle this .fits format. The manpage should tell you. It only converts one file so you'll need a loop

for f in *.fits; do
        convert $f ${f%.*}.jpg
