Automating keypresses on Linux

Hi,
I'm totally new to Linux and need help with the following:

We have a point-of-sale system that runs off Linux and what we are basically trying to do is to basically build an automation test framework that would effectively simulate a cashier running transactions.

Are there any tools that we could use ?
(The till is running Fedora Linux and the hardware is quite old)

Here are some of the obstacles we are experiencing: The tool has to be able to be installed and run in console mode with capabilities of executing scripts that we will build. We tried builing our own tool creating a .jar executable which makes use of the java robot package but when we tried to run it linux complained about some glibc_2.3.4 requirement which I could never install.

Any help would be great...Thanks.

"expect" would be the first port of call here.
