Talking Autoconf question!

Well, I have begun a little mini-quest to learn exactly what Autoconf and Automake are. And, lord am I confused. Expect to see me back here in a bit. But, for now, I have one quick question!

As quoted, in the manual -

"The configuration scripts produced by Autoconf are independent of Autoconf when they are run, so their users do not need to have Autoconf."

So, that means that Autoconf is only run by the software developer, and it makes the "./configure" script that I run to install software? And therefore, the next time I screw up my box, and I reinstall, I can take Autoconf out of the list of things to install? Cause I don't develop software.

Some programs require you to have autoconf and some don't. It's generally a good thing to have installed.
(PS), we have a slackware forum in the distro section :-)
