If you don't have root privileges to the system then you'll need to ask someone who does have them to do this for you.
cheers,

Hi,

Things that come to mind:

- Is there anything in the log files that can shed some more light on this?
- Does the passwd command has the correct user/group/permissions?
- Are the pam config files (still) correct?

Which distro are you using?
