a tar.gz file is an archived file.

you unzip them with the following command:

tar xvzf nameofthefile.tar.gz

this actually does two things, it "gunzips" the zipped file (hence the gz at the end of the file name) and hand it over to the tar program to unarchive it (hence the tar extension).

usually your program should be unzipped in the /usr directory as root. it also usually unzips into its own directory similar to the name of the file. you need to go into this directory to run the ./configure etc commands. almost always the programmer will have a README and an INSTALL file with instructions on what to do.

good luck.
