Audio output white noise

I just set up Pulseaudio in Ubuntu 9.04. I know my external speakers are working because when I start up my PC, I can hear a login sound coming from the speakers. When I get to my desktop and play something a sound file, all I hear is white noise instead of the music. Sam goes when I run the Audio tests from the System Preferences/Sound application.

What should I check to make sure I set up my audio properly?

Is there anything I should post back regarding more information?

Have you looked here yet? This solves most sound problems.
Have a look at your alsamixer settings.
