sound on RHEL5 ( 5 point what??? )
5.0,5.1,5.2 to 5.8

RHEL is normally installed on a SERVER that has NO screen ( monitor ) and NO 3d/video card and NO sound card and NO speakers attached

so support for those is rather limited

Also RHEL 5 is OLD and 5.0 is VERY OLD
so there IS no support for any NEW hardware in 5
RHEL 6.3 might have support for your hardware ? or not
ask your red hat tech support rep
you ARE paying a yearly license to use RHEL5
So you might as well take advantage OF the tech support YOU are ALREADY paying for

Goodmorning John,

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.1 (Tikanga)

As we aren't paying to get red hat tech support.

Thanks,
Prasanth george

If you are not paying for the REQUIRED license
do not use it !!!
--- desktop price --
https://www.redhat.com/apps/store/desktop/

instead install one of the FREE rebuilds
CentOS 6.3
CeientificLinux6.3
or from the OLD 5 series
Centos 5.8
SL5.8

for Red Hat Enterprise Linux ( RHEL )
you have to buy a support contract
-- no if's and's or but's --
if you do not
then YOU DO NOT install any software
( at least not easily )
http://www.redhat.com/support/subscription-benefits/

put it this way
it is way WAY easier to convert this rhel5.1 into CentOS 5.8
than it is to work with an unsupported rhel install
but again
5.8 is OLD and might not even support your hardware

hardware list for the older rhel5
https://hardware.redhat.com/list.cgi...ent/Peripheral
and the OLD cent5 hardware list
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalRes...74911ed5405fed

you did not say but the information in the first post makes me think that this is a Laptop
you are truing to use a SERVER os on a laptop
" some" laptops work
most laptops will ONLY mostly work
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops

common problems on laptops with RHEL installed are
mouse pad not working
mouse pad buttons not working
sound not working
headphones not working
3d "chip" not working
usb "dongles" not working
