Try to open a cd player program, like KsCD for example, or your favourite multimedia player (like Amarok) and try that way. Maybe your system mis-thinks the disc is empty (should not, though)?

you might want to check out XMMS. many distros include both XMMS and the CD plugin for said player.

Ok new problem, it won't play with ANYTHING. I think it is because it isn't mounted right. Maybe I shut down with it still mounted but all I know is it doesn't work now. Anyone know what they are doing?

Okay, I don't use Mepis, but I'll see if I can help. How familiar are you with the command line?

First you'll need to make sure your user is in the audio group. Then you'll need to make sure that your user has access to the cd and dvd drives so that your user is allowed to use them.
Run this as root
Code:
gpasswd -a <user name> audio
and this as your user
Code:
cat /etc/fstab
and see if you have "user" as one of your options for your CD and DVD devices.

Thats a good start, see if it helps.

This problem also threw me when I first used Linux.

Open your volume controller, and go into it's preferences. Make sure the "Exchange DAC" switch is being dispayed as a control. Then make sure it's off.

This is a problem for some of my soundcards under ALSA.

Also check alsamixer and make sure the volume is turned up. Most have the volume turned down by default.

Volume is not the issue. The CD has worked before but now it stopped. I don't know where to find Exchange DAC its not in kmix.
