ATI Radeon 9250 video card issue

Hello!

I'm just looking at switching (or at least trying and experimenting) to linux. I've downloaded several live cd's (Knoppix, simplyMEPIS, PCLinuxOS, and several others) just to see which distro I like. I'd like to do a hdd install and dualboot with Windows XP.

My HP Pavillion xl761 has an onboard video card and a PCI ATI Radeon 9250. Whenever I boot a live CD or install a distro just with using the onboard card, everything works fine. Whenever I boot using the PCI ATI card, the system freezes right before loading the GUI, regardless of the distro. I'd like to use linux with my ATI card (128mb RAM vs 4mb onboard). What should I do? Should I install a linux distro and install the ATI drivers? Sorry to be a newbie, but can anyone walk me through this?

Thank you very much!

Hi

you may want to try disabling the onboard video so Linux would not see it.
there should be an option in the bios. Im still a newbie to Linux but that
is what I did in windows on another machine.

Hey! Thanks a lot for helping me out. I forgot to mention earlier that my motherboard does not let me disable the onboard video card. I've tried through the BIOS, no luck there either. There are no jumpers on the board either. I was wondering, since I can run linux through my onboard video card, is there a way to configure linux to recognize my ATI card then restart linux using it?

Thanks!

Dave

Dave

how to configure a second video card is over my head. perhaps one of the
users in the hardware or software section may be able to tell you how.

good luck
Vanessa
