i am running suse. the latest version with all updates. i have tried mandrake, fudora, ark, debian. I tried them all and found i like suse best.
on each package i have tried to install the driver for my 9600 radeon pro. every time i end up crashing and having to reinstall linux. i do not want to do that anymore as this time everything is set up nice.
i am almost winblows free but i need to game and without 3d support i can't,
i have read and tried all the online suggestions i can find. always end up having to reinstall after going thru hours of trial and error.
if anybody knows a good way or can help me git this gioing it would really be great.
im a newbie but after a few weeks at it i am starting to be able to do some stuff.
i have no idea what the following means.
3D support is basically provided through the modules DRI, GLX, and the modules fireGL for the FireGL chipsets. A list of graphics card types and their required 3D modules follows:
Manufacturer Graphics Card Type Requirement (package) Module Script

ryan&carl -- I'm not sure who you are directing this comment to, but perhaps it would be useful to point out that everyone here at LQ is a volunteer, trying to help others in his/her free time. If an issue you are facing requires an urgent or immediate resolution, my advice to you would be to seek out the services of a paid professional rather than to make critical and sarcastic remarks here. Please keep in mind that the reality of a global user community (such as LQ has) means that sometimes it may take some time before a given post is seen by someone who may be able to help. Please be patient, and if/when a person has advice to offer, he/she will do so. -- J.W.
I had the same problems. You know what the problem was? ATi's lame videocard. The have the worst driver support for linux. I went out and bought a nice shiny Nvidia card and installed it with no problems. Do yourself a favor and ditch the ATi card and get an Nvidia.
as j.w. said, the people here are volunteers. you come here expecting everyone to devote all their time to you? have you seen the number of posts on this page? no one HAS to help you and with an attitude like that i dont see how anyone would want to VOLUNTEER their time to you. however since this isnt a very hard problem ill answer it for you. suse has released packages for ati radeon cards. ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup.../fglrx/3.11.1/
go to that site, download both rpms, and follow the readme. simple as that.

@other guy: sorry not possible. First of all I cant afford it. Second of all its a laptop so i dont know how easy this can be done.
@J.W. again: I guess if you guys dont help I will have to go back to windows
ryan&carl -- It seems that your attitude is that LQ somehow owes you an answer or is somehow obligated to solve each and every problem that you may encounter when you are working with Linux, but unfortunately, that's not how things work. As I indicated previously, you need to understand that everyone here is a volunteer who does their best (and in their free time) to lend whatever support and assistance they can to others. Some people here do know a great deal about Linux, while others may have only used it for a couple of days, but everyone tries to help each other out. If you do not consider this site to be worth your while, well, quite frankly, nobody is forcing you to keep coming back here.
As for your ultimatum that you will go back to Windows if your demands for problem resolution are not met, that choice is totally up to you. If you want to stay, fine; if you want to go, goodbye. It's 100% up to you. -- J.W.

Thanks for the tip, I will try it. In my short time at LQ I think everyone doesnt like me but thats ok.
Also J.W.: Sorry I will work on it but I wont go back to windows anyways. Well anyways.
ryan&carl -- Well, welcome back to LQ. However, enough already with these pointless "I am disturbed" comments. Per the LQ Rules which you agreed to follow when you signed up, "Do not post if you do not have anything constructive to say in the post." These kinds of nonsense comments clearly are not constructive and do nothing to move the discussion forward, and they only clutter up the thread making it harder to find useful information. If you have meaningful comments to make you are welcome to post them, but no more repetitive nonsense please. -- J.W.
