ati radeon
i am running suse. the latest version with all updates. i have tried mandrake, fudora, ark, debian. I tried them all and found i like suse best.
on each package i have tried to install the driver for my 9600 radeon pro. every time i end up crashing and having to reinstall linux. i do not want to do that anymore as this time everything is set up nice. i am almost winblows free but i need to game and without 3d support i can't, :( i have read and tried all the online suggestions i can find. always end up having to reinstall after going thru hours of trial and error. if anybody knows a good way or can help me git this gioing it would really be great. im a newbie but after a few weeks at it i am starting to be able to do some stuff. i have no idea what the following means. 3D support is basically provided through the modules DRI, GLX, and the modules fireGL for the FireGL chipsets. A list of graphics card types and their required 3D modules follows: Manufacturer Graphics Card Type Requirement (package) Module Script ATI * Rage128er Serie * Radeon Serie requirement package* xf86_glx script *switch2xf86_glx modules xf86_glx dri / glx dri / glx fglr200 / dri / glx if anybody understands this and can spend some time helping that would be awesome. many thanks |
that last bit after "i have no idea what this means" was from the suse support site. they gave no help in how to do it. only what to do.

I have a laptop with an ati radeon 9000 and I have the same problem.

I had the same problems. You know what the problem was? ATi's lame videocard. The have the worst driver support for linux. I went out and bought a nice shiny Nvidia card and installed it with no problems. Do yourself a favor and ditch the ATi card and get an Nvidia.

@J.W.: I dont know what I am disturbed about, just in general I am disturbed at the people that consider themselves so called 'experts'
@other guy: sorry not possible. First of all I cant afford it. Second of all its a laptop so i dont know how easy this can be done. @J.W. again: I guess if you guys dont help I will have to go back to windows:p |
as j.w. said, the people here are volunteers. you come here expecting everyone to devote all their time to you? have you seen the number of posts on this page? no one HAS to help you and with an attitude like that i dont see how anyone would want to VOLUNTEER their time to you. however since this isnt a very hard problem ill answer it for you. suse has released packages for ati radeon cards.
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/sup.../fglrx/3.11.1/ go to that site, download both rpms, and follow the readme. simple as that. edit: itywygms my comments were not directed to you, so please ignore anything above the posted link |

As for your ultimatum that you will go back to Windows if your demands for problem resolution are not met, that choice is totally up to you. If you want to stay, fine; if you want to go, goodbye. It's 100% up to you. -- J.W. |
after all that I still need some help with my card. please refer to http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...readid=220670.
i have also switched to ark linux. which is based off redhat 8. i am off on business for a week so it will be a while before i can get back. thanks for all the help. and entertainment:p |
