ATI Mobility Radeon+Blank screen+FC5

Hi, I am new to linux and am trying to get my monitor to work on my Dell Latitude D600. It has an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000. Whenever I boot Fedora and load GNOME, my screen on my laptop goes blank but if I hook up an external monitor, that works fine. The screen on my laptop only works when I am in text mode. I got Fedora to work on my Toshiba laptop fine. I have already downloaded and installed the drivers from the ATI website and I still get the same problem. I have searched for hours for a solution but can't find anything. BTW I also tried installing Ubuntu on the same laptop and the screen worked fine.
