Question ATI Drivers for HP/Compaq 6715b Ubuntu 9.10

Hi folks I'm trying to install the ATI drivers on this machine running Ubuntu 9.10.
Hi folks, I have a Compaq 6715b and I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64.
I can't seem to get the driver installation right.

I downloaded downloaded ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run

Code:
justin@Ubuntu-lappy:~/Downloads$ sh ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64.run
Created directory fglrx-install.yPqZeU
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing ATI Proprietary Linux Driver-8.593............

 ATI Technologies Linux Driver Installer/Packager

*Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version*
default:v2:x86_64:lib::none:2.6.31-16-generic; make sure that the version is being
correctly set by --iscurrentdistro

Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.yPqZeU

Then I tried using apt-get
Code:
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
and it seems to go through without a hitch - but I still can't get the proper resolution on my screen.

IIRC: the "policy" error usually has something to do with not having kernel headers installed

But you have used the approved method of installing the ubuntu packaged driver.
Did you go through System > Administration > Hardware Drivers?

You may have to generate an xorg.conf file and add your desired resolution if linux has trouble getting that info off your monitor.
