ATI Driver Nightmare

Hello. I downloaded ati's linux drivers for my suse 9.1 system, and now I can't boot into x anymore. No matter what I try in fglrxconfig nothing seems to work. I looked at the xf86 server log and it does find my radeon 9200 chipset, however I get fater server error messege after that. Anyone else try installing these drivers? I don't know what to do from here, and I don't want to reinstall suse AGAIN. Thanks

in console, become root, and cd to /etc/X11

Check for a backup of XF86Config, if there is one, rename it back. Then X Windows should start just fine using the old drivers.

If it's not to late take It back and go Nvidia or you will waste months reading posts in this forum and you have only a 10% chance of actually getting it to work. Sorry I have a sour taste in my mouth when it comes to ATI

yeah, it's too late. I had no idea about ati sucking ass for linux. I just went out and bought a cheap low end card with tv output (I have an athlon 700 so I don't care that much about speed). Is there any way I can avoid reinstalling suse and go back to the default drivers that were working? I don't think there is a backup. If I pop the dvd in and run setup can I fix the display settings?
