Athlon rpms and packages

I'm just wondering, I have an athlonxp cpu. How backwards compatible is it with other architectures? I know that it'll install 386 packages alright. Will athlonxp's work with 486, 586, 686, 786 (assuming there are 786's) without a performance decrease?

I guess I'm asking because I'm trying to install j2sdk on redhat 9.0 and they only offer the 586 packages.

586 is fine for an Athlon, which is defined as a 686 processor (there are no 786s at the moment). Some packages are specifically Athlon-based and have the suffix -ath.rpm - you don't see many, though.
