aterm title doesn't change for normal users

I've tried changing aterm's title string but it doesn't seem to work when logged in as a normal user.
When logged in as root, aterm -title "my title" works fine...

any ideas on what I could be doing wrong?

Distro: Gentoo
Kernel: vanilla 2.4.27
WM: fluxbox

that gives me a new terminal with the title "ads" ..
